Cutback Bitumen Medium Curing (MC)30 is a mixture of bitumen and solvents like kerosene. Many countries use kerosene and other volatile petroleum products as a cutter or cutback agent to reduce (or cutback) the viscosity of the bitumen. The reduction in viscosity of bitumen aids in the construction of seal coats in road pavements, as the softened mixture wets the chips more easily. The cutback agent evaporates from the seal coat, becoming a negligible component of the seal coat a few months after application.
However, if significant amounts of the cutback agent remain in the seal coat, an unwanted long-term softening effect may result.
Uses of Cutback Bitumen MC30:
Cutback Bitumen MC30 is used for the initial incorporation of asphalt into the surface of non-asphalt-based courses, preparatory to any superimposed treatment of construction. It is also applied for waterproofing surfaces, plugging capillary voids, and coating and bonding loose mineral particles. Cutback agents are utilized to lower the viscosity of bitumen when it is applied as a primer to the surface of a road pavement aggregate base course or substrate.
Kerosene as a Bitumen Cutback Agent:
Kerosene is used as a bitumen cutback agent at different concentrations according to local conditions and requirements. Cutback Bitumen MC30 is ideal for prime coat and cold application due to its ease of use and no need for thinning and heating.
