Asphalt binder samples are tested for viscosity at 60ºC, measured in poise (cm-g-s = dyne-second/cm2). Lower viscosity means easier flow, making it an ideal choice for various applications.
Hence, AC-5, with a viscosity of 500 ± 100 poise at 60°C (140°F), exhibits lower viscosity compared to AC-40, which has a viscosity of 4000 ± 800 poise at 60°C (140°F). Table 2 outlines the standard viscosity grades for the AC and AR grading systems as per AASHTO M 226 and ASTM D 3381. Commonly used grades for Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) paving in the U.S. include AC-10, AC-20, AC-30, AR-4000, and AR-8000.
The
AC viscosity bitumen
is classified into six different grades: AC 2.5, AC 5, AC 10, AC 20, AC 30, and AC 40.
Packing
AC bitumen, being a liquid, is packaged in new steel drums. These drums can be palletized and loaded into a 20-foot Full Container Load (FCL).
Additionally, this grade of bitumen can be loaded in bulk onto vessels.
